MEP Loukas Fourlas revealed that he had been approached by Ms Kaili to make some amendments to the damning report on Qatar
The revelations about the scandal in the European Parliament continue with the arrest of Eva Kaili. MEP Loukas Fourlas, a guest at Mesimeri and Kati, reported that he had been approached by Mrs. Kaili to pass amendments concerning Qatar.
He explained that he had been approached by Ms Kaili to make some amendments to the report on Qatar which was damning. “This happens between colleagues. When I saw the amendments and they were about Qatar, I got goosebumps and I called the Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Corniliou, and he told him that as Cyprus we should not get involved.”
He added that he did not make any amendments. “The amendment would say that Qatar was not as strict on human rights and the crackdown on homosexuality. It concerned subjects that would undermine the strict style of the exhibition.”
He stressed that there is an “ice block” in the European Parliament. “We had all commented on Mrs. Kaili’s speech at the European Parliament where she said the best things about Qatar. I had been impressed and I had addressed her was the reference that Qatar has the role of mediator with Turkey and that the role of Turkey and Qatar is the best”. He explained that Qatar is Turkey’s main financier. “We cannot wash away Qatar.”
He also mentioned that the institution of lobbying in the European Parliament is institutionalized. “It is up to each MEP who to see, what to listen to and how to act “The lobbyists are trying to do their job and pass their own interests. If some MEPs indulge in money and travel, let them pay the marble”.
