The place, the date of printing the money as well as when, where and by whom the withdrawal was made are examined by the Belgian authorities – The Belgian authorities put the Europeans’ relations and decisions with Qatar under the microscope
Investigations are now focusing on the route of the money, specifically the 1.5 million euros seized by the Belgian authorities, in order to identify the culprits of the Qarargate scandal that has shaken the existential foundations of European institutions and many fear that it is only the tip of the iceberg. At the same time, the Belgian investigator decided today to extend the detention of Eva Caili’s husband, Francesco Giorgi, and the former MEP, Pier Antonio Panzeri. At the same time, for Nikolos Talamanga he decided to remain in custody but with the conditions of the electronic bracelet. On the contrary, on December 22, the decision will be issued on the pre-trial detention or not of Eva Kaili, who did not attend today’s hearing.
All four arrested are facing charges of participation in a criminal organization, money laundering and corruption. However, they can appeal within the next 24 hours after the decision of the investigator and appear before the appeals court (for Greek data) within the next 15 days.
Following the money trail
Belgian authorities are now focusing their investigations on the money trail in order to trace where and when the money was printed as well as when, where and by whom it was withdrawn.
According to information, the banknotes have the letter “Z” on them, which means that they were printed in Belgium, while based on the Syrian number they have, it seems that they were recently printed. At the same time, the fingerprints on the banknotes are a possibility to give answers to the authorities, while a special form that is filled out in case of withdrawal of large sums of money is supposed to lead the authorities to the person who proceeded to withdraw the money.
However, according to the Belgian authorities, 150 euros were found in the house of Eva Kaili and her partner, 600,000 euros were found in the house of Pier Antonio Panzeri, another 600,000 euros were found in the suitcase of Mrs. Kaili’s father and 20,000 in the house of Francesco Giorgi outside Milan.
Qatar Airways is also in the spotlight
At the same time, the relations and decisions of the Europeans with Qatar are under the microscope of the Belgian authorities, such as the agreement recently made between them “Open Skies” which gives Qatar Airways unlimited access to the European market of 450 million citizens with little exchange for Europe .
From 2021 the Qatargate investigation
The Belgian newspapers Le Soir and Knack report that the investigation into the scandal was launched in 2021 by the Belgian secret services. In fact, as part of the investigation, they carried out a secret raid on the home office of former MEP Panchieri, finding one million euros, an amount which, however, they did not confiscate at the time. Subsequently, they informed five other secret services of EU member states and only last July, when they had collected all the necessary information, they informed the Office for the Fight against Corruption. Afterwards, the investigations were mainly undertaken by the Belgian police in cooperation with the prosecutor’s office until a few days ago when they carried out the raids.
“Leaf and feather” the life of Eva Kaili
According to the British press, Mrs. Kaili’s luxurious life, such as real estate, companies and her ultra-luxurious vacations, as well as the purchase of a house in Palio Psychiko in 2019 for 260,000 euros, have also been targeted.
In its report, the British tabloid refers – among others – to the 2017 vacation that Kylie took (before becoming an MEP) on British tycoon Richard Branson’s private luxury island in the Caribbean, as his guest.
