The 27 members of the European Union are now one step ahead of the final agreement on the ceiling on the price of natural gas, as at the Summit it was agreed to “close” the issue on December 19, at the next Energy Summit.

The agreement of the “27” was reached after the key intervention of the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and was included in the text of conclusions on Energy.

The text explicitly mentions the decision for a definitive solution next week, speaking of a mechanism that will closely monitor developments in the energy markets and intervene whenever deemed appropriate.

The aim, as stated in the text of the conclusions, is to create sufficiency security in view of the next winter (2023-2024), as the crisis will last.

Earlier, the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined, according to information, during his intervention at the European Council that, while the order for the formation of a ceiling (price correction mechanism) was given since last October, it has not yet been implemented.

According to the same information, he made it clear that the issue must be closed on Monday at the Council of Energy Ministers, while he asked to include in the text of the conclusions, which was finally done, a relevant reference on the need to urgently finalize the issue on the 19 December.

During the debate on transatlantic relations that preceded it and in particular on the American Inflation Reduction Act, Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the need for Europe to move in a coordinated manner and support European businesses, putting money on the table and strengthening the RepowerEU.
