Christos Staikouras and Euclidis Tsakalotos exchanged harsh characterizations in the plenary session of the Parliament on the economy and development in the country.
A direct conflict between the Minister of Finance Christos Staikouras and his predecessor Euclids Tsakalotos occurred earlier in the Parliament with the two politicians even exchanging harsh characterizations.
Christos Staikouras, who welcomed the fact that today two banks, one systemic, reduced by 50% the commissions in banking transactions, assessed that the banks will move faster and more efficiently and there will be other positive steps for the benefit of citizens.
“We are not satisfied, more work is required, mainly from loan managers,” he said in the 2023 budget debate, referring to the fact that one in four systemic banks has increased deposit rates, while a reduction in fees is also being considered, noting that the logic “my profits, your costs”, finds no response in the current government.
The Minister of Finance even attacked SYRIZA, characterizing the measures it proposes as irresponsible, unsubstantiated, adventurous and gratuitous, provoking the reaction of Euclid Tsakalotos who objected that the ND bankrupted the country.
In his keynote speech in particular, the Minister referred to the actions of the SYRIZA government, characterizing the economic policy of the four-year period 2015-19 as “arrogant” and “adventurous”.
As a result of the actions of SYRIZA, Greece was, as mentioned, put under a special status of enhanced supervision by the institutions.
“Yes, we were the only country with enhanced supervision” admitted Mr. Tsakalotos.
“But what was the difference compared to the other countries that passed memoranda? We had four meetings with the Institutions while the others who were under post-pneumonic monitoring had 2. And we went into enhanced supervision because you bankrupted the country. Same on you. I’ve sat in 11 budget debates and I’ve never called anyone a liar, an adventurer and an arrogant prick like you. I return the characterizations: you are both a liar and an arrogant person and an adventurer”
“Your own government bankrupted it and now you come to tell us that you took us out of the memorandums. And liar and arrogant and adventurer. I take back everything you said,” he said.
