Schertsos: The ND faction always serves only the true interests of the nation

“This faction will always serve only the true interests of the nation, which are beyond and above the misleading labels of the Right, the Center and the Left,” said the Minister of State, Akis Skertsos, speaking in Parliament this evening.

Previously, the minister hastened to underline that “Greece and its political system are not characterized, nor defined by individual misguided and reprehensible behaviors” and that “no politician can claim exemption from control procedures and mechanisms”.

“At the moment when Greece comes out with praise from European supervision, which achieves twice the rate of economic growth than the rest of Europe, our national proposals, for the energy crisis today, the pandemic a little earlier, are adopted and become European policies, at the moment that Greece is among the four European countries that have already received approval for the disbursement of the second installment of the Recovery Fund, a heavy shadow is spread over the country’s political system. So I feel the need to say that Greece and its political system are not characterized or defined by individual inappropriate and reprehensible behaviors”, said the Minister of State and added: “However, I also feel the obligation to emphasize that both the political representation and the political governance cannot be fields of selfish interests and frivolous pursuits, with the aim of increasing the personal wealth of each of us”.

“Only those who are willing to really contribute to the public should enter politics, literally spending from their personal capital, material and immaterial, so that when they leave they are poorer individually, but richer collectively and morally,” said Mr. Skertsos and added: “No politician can claim exemption from procedures and control mechanisms, for what he is authorized by the citizens to serve. Of course we all have the presumption of innocence, but at the same time we all, since we choose public exposure over private life, must be constantly controlled and held accountable for the way in which we manage, as bearers of power and representative democracy, this heavy responsibility. Because in the end, only checks and institutional counterweights, together with the conscience of each one of us, are the ones that limit criminal behavior, are the ones that make us all and all transparent, as we must be towards citizens, and are the ones that ultimately increase citizens’ trust in institutions and democracy”.

“The responsibility of all of us today is great, because the extremes are lurking to get the upper hand in every deviation of democracy”, said Akis Skertsos.

Achievements of Greece

“Greece, after 3.5 years and three “mega-crises”, is not only standing on its own feet, but is also recording remarkable performances recorded in international indices,” said Mr. Skertsos during the Budget debate and pointed out:

– Greece has twice the growth rate of the European average.

– Achieved the biggest and fastest fall in public debt in Europe, close to 40 points.

– It has the largest and fastest reduction in unemployment in Europe, with a simultaneous addition of 290,000 jobs.

– There has been a steady increase in the incomes of the most vulnerable, with a double increase in the minimum wage, with the addition of a 15th wage, with a reduction in taxes and contributions.

– He achieved the leapfrog digitization of the state.

– Achieved record highs in public and private investment, exports as a share of GDP, private investment in innovation, with a rapid improvement in the investment environment, up 16 places.

– Ranked 8th worldwide in electricity production from RES. Almost 46% of energy comes from the sun, air, water.

– Achieved a position among the 12 countries internationally, which have achieved, at a legal level, full gender equality in the labor market.

– Achieved the extroversion of universities, with strategic agreements with giant US universities.

– It succeeded in the vaccination indicators of the population, but also in overall management of the pandemic, in terms of cases and excess mortality exactly at the European average.

“Not all problems have been solved. Greece has a long way to go to cover the distance that separates it from other European countries, to become a European economy with decent wages, a society with equal job opportunities, with equal rights for all, a territory with coherent development in every corner of the country, with better public health, with faster administration of justice. But we are moving forward. We are making strides and we are definitely in a better place than where we were in 2019,” said the Minister of State.

“The characteristic of our politics is the detachment from political ideologies and party anchorages,” Akis Skertsos also said and noted: “Political currents and ideologies are not the ten commandments. In a democracy there are no good and bad ideologies, except those that promote violence, racism, intolerance. We know that there are no left and right problems. For us there are only problems and our guide is the legacy of Constantinos Karamanlis: That this faction will always serve only the true interests of the nation that are beyond and above the misleading labels of the Right, the Center and the Left”.
