The “use” of Mitsotakis for Metsovo – The timing of the elections is a puzzle – Profits and losses of the parties after the debate on the budget

By Penelope Galliou

The ribbon of the start of a long-term election campaign that will be judged as everything shows in an “extension” of three to six months within 2023, cut from the floor of the Parliament the Prime Minister and with the vote of Frbudget for the 2023 election year.

Shortly after the passing of the budget, Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself with a “use” avoided specifying clearly the setting up of the ballot box, but announced that he would make his decisions on the date of the elections during the Christmas holidays, from Metsovo where he will be found. “The important decisions are made there” said the Prime Minister speaking to the journalists, reminding everyone of his corresponding saying, shortly before Christmas 2019, when he also from Metsovo took the decision to nominate Katerina Sakellaropoulou for the Presidency of the Republic in 2020 .

The prime minister’s entourage continues to note that the prime minister never backed down from the goal of exhausting the government’s constitutional mandate at the end of the four-year term. However, they observed that if the polls are finally determined in the spring of 2023, this cannot be considered an early appeal to the polls. Other sources, at the same time, insist on excluding the first months of 2023, without this meaning that the dates before Easter have been excluded from the government scenarios. On the other hand, speaking on SKAI television, the day after the budget was passed, the Minister of State George Gerapetritis, estimated that “we will eat the lamb in the village in peace. My feeling is that the elections will be held at the end of the four-year period”. After all, according to Mr. Gerapetritis, the government is on full alert, in the sense that it has not picked up the pencils heading towards the preparation of the pre-election campaign: “I personally would not bet a single euro that we will soon have elections in the near future” commented. In any case, the announcement of elections is the exclusive decision and prerogative of the prime minister and any update of his plans, as he stated, will likely be done during the Christmas holidays.

For now and in the run up to the elections, it seems that apart from the economy, which is clearly at the forefront of the government’s agenda to smooth out the spikes and difficulties caused by the inflationary and energy crisis, current affairs are judged to play decisive role in shaping the climate and trends that will prevail.

Qatargate and the management of its involvement Eva Kailis by Nikos Androulakis, was a treaty of this kind, which put the president of PASOK KINAL in the prime minister’s and ND’s sights, placing him almost next to Alexis Tsipras, talking about an identification between the two politicians. The ND’s tactics in the next period, apart from the frontal conflict with SYRIZA, are expected to focus on the view that “voting for PASOK will result in SYRIZA”, attempting to approach and “fish” PASOK voters who throughout the ND’s governance they see him positively Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The prime minister made his mark from the floor of the Parliament when he referred to the messages that Nikos Androulakis has been sending to the voters since he took over as president of PASOK. At the beginning, Mr. Androulakis changed his line three times, after saying “only PASOK, then neither Tsipras nor Mitsotakis and now the ND in the opposition. And you in the role of a social-Kammenos, this is how you imagine your role”.

In fact, when the PASOK MPs reacted, Mr. Mitsotakis answered them “the ND is in the opposition, so you and SYRIZA are in the government, unless you imagine that you will get 40% and I want to be like Antetokounmpo, but that is not possible. Every party can chart its own path, but I emphasize these regressions of PASOK” he concluded.

In any case, the target is the voters of PASOK and in order to achieve this, “surgical” pre-election manipulations will have to be carried out that will not awaken the party patriotism of these voters, because this entails the risk of the opposite result…

Because, however, numbers always play their role in party tactics, government officials who are informed and analyze opinion polls, identify a stable part of PASOK voters who still see Mr. Mitsotakis positively, but -mostly- completely abhor him SYRIZA. Due to this fact, they focus with emphasis on the message that the prime minister sought to pass through the Parliament, that the Nikos Androulakis wants to co-govern with SYRIZA.
