We are one day before Eva Kaili crosses the threshold of the judicial council. The Belgian authorities are focusing their microscope on the entire action of Mrs. Kaili since, let’s recall, until her removal last week, she was one of the 14 vice-presidents of the European Parliament.
However, she still has a way to go, as authorities in Belgium believe she has not yet confessed everything she knows about the corruption scandal roiling Brussels, in which she, as vice-president, is said to be the key person in the if Giorgi and Pancheri could finally move the strings for… the sake of Qatar and Morocco at the heart of the European Union.
It was Friday December 9th. Francesco Giorgi has just been brought in front of the garage of their house. Eva Kaili in a state of panic and confusion prone to errors and contradictions during the first interrogations at the police headquarters in Brussels and before the investigator, Michel Clez.
The Belgian newspaper “Le Soir”, with a report citing court documents, states that the now-prisoned former president of the European Parliament, confessed that she had asked her father, Mr. Alexandros Kailis, to hide the money which she had in the home she shared with her partner, Francesco Giorgi, in the Belgian capital.
And according to the Italian newspaper “La Repubblica”, Mrs. Kaili admitted that she had knowledge of the bribes with recipients Giorgi and the former Italian MEP, Pier Antonio Panzeri.
In the court documents, which are also cited by the Italian newspaper, it is stated that knowing that her partner had now been brought and even close to their home, she “tried to warn Pancheri and two MEPs about the present investigation, with the result that the authorities to arrest her as well, something that was not foreseen at the first stage”. At the moment it remains unknown who these two MEPs are, however we learn for the first time that he called Pancheri, who is considered the mastermind of the scandal.
As the investigator notes in her arrest warrant, “the defendant admits that she instructed her father to hide the money” and states that she “knew from her partner’s past, the activities with Mr. Pancheri and the suitcases of cash passed through her apartment”.
At the same time, according to “La Repubblica”, Mrs. Kaili also talked about buying an apartment with her husband, reporting to the prosecutor that she participated “unofficially” in the repayment of the loan.
However, one of the two advocates of Ms. Kaili, Mr. Michalis Dimitrakopoulos asserts that “Ms. Kaili did not confess that she asked her father to transfer money in order to hide it” and adds that “Ms. Kaili found out about this money at the last moment and immediately asked that it go to its owner, Mr. . Pancheri”.
In more detail, Mr. Dimitrakopoulos emphasizes that when Ms. Kaili was informed of the arrest of her partner, she tried to find Pancheri to hand over the money to him: “one option was to hand her partner over to the police, the second was to go the money to their owner. She has no obligation to report her husband under European law.” As regards the properties she owns, Mr. Dimitrakopoulos explains that they are justified by her salaries and clarified again that Ms. Kaili denies any involvement in the case.
At the same time, both reports state that Francesco Giorgi admitted to being a member of an organization used by Morocco and Qatar to interfere in European affairs. While, according to “Le Soir” Pierre Antonio Pancheri is said to be the recipient of gifts and the Belgian MEP of the S&D, Marc Tarabella.
However, the current member of the European Parliament, Andrea Cozzolino, remains in the frame as he – according to “Kathimerini” allegedly sent an email to his social democratic MEP colleagues as a member of the sub-committee on human rights and head of the delegation for EU relations – Morocco. In that email, the report says, the Neapolitan MEP was asking his colleagues to vote against a paragraph that included spikes in the funding of football players in order for Qatar to eventually host the football World Cup.
“I want to ask you to vote against this particular paragraph. It includes the allegation that the World Cup was given to Qatar by FIFA through bribery and corruption. The European Parliament should not accuse a country without proof from the relevant judicial authorities,” he said. the sender Andrea Cozzolino wrote in the message.
At the moment the MEP in question has not been summoned by the judicial authorities, however, the remanded Francesco Giorgi in his lengthy testimony is said to have pointed to him as a central figure along with Panzeri, who also remains in remand. Of course, there are not a few who believe that Giorgi, who worked as his parliamentary assistant, could be the one who drafted the email and not the Italian MEP.
Investigations continue, but so do the revelations…
