The MEP will remain in Haren prison for a month

The judicial authorities decided to remand Eva Kaili despite the request of her lawyers to be released with a bracelet. According to an announcement by the federal prosecutor’s office in Brussels, the pre-trial detention of the MEP will be extended for one month, thus rejecting the request of her lawyers.

The announcement, however, does not refer to the reasoning behind this decision.

Ms. Kaili will remain in Haren Prison for the time being. However, he can appeal within the next 24 hours and then appear before the corresponding Belgian appeals court within the next 15 days.

It is recalled that Eva Kaili’s statement this morning before the Pre-Trial Council lasted approximately 1.5 hours.

Her lawyer of Greek origin, Andre Rizopoulos, had requested that Mrs. Kaili be released with an electronic bracelet, adding that she actively cooperates with the investigations of the judicial authorities and rejects any accusation of corruption regarding her. For his part, Ms. Kaili’s other lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, stated that his client is innocent.
