The great why, which torments the innocent souls of Ukraine’s children, may never be answered, noted the PtD.
“These days, our thoughts are on the children of Ukraine. The most beautiful, the most carefree years were swept away by the war”, emphasizes the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou with a post on her Facebook account on Christmas Day.
Ms. Sakellaropoulou states that “they lost a home, often a parent, sibling, friends, they were separated from their families, they were forced to find refuge in other countries. They have forgotten to laugh. They live with fear, insecurity, uncertainty. And when they ask, they only ask for two gifts from Santa Claus, for the war to end and for their fathers to come home.”
“The big why, which torments the innocent souls of Ukraine’s children, may never be answered. The wounds may not heal.” However, he points out that “Ukrainians are determined not to let the war steal Christmas from their children” and adds: “The big tree of ‘Invincible Ukraine’ in the heart of Kiev, decorated with doves of peace, lit with yellow and blue lights in the colors of the country, with the emblem of the golden trident at the top, is the response to the violence of the invaders”, added the President of the Republic
He also noted that “even if this image is not enough to nullify the pain of an unjust and unprovoked war, it can, however, fill hearts with hope and bring, finally, to the lips of the children who have suffered so much , a certain smile”.
The entire post of the President of the Republic:
“It does not matter whether Ukrainians will celebrate Christmas today, as their church has set since 2017, or on January 7, as before, according to the tradition of the Russian church. It is significant that the great celebration of Christianity, synonymous with love and family warmth, the exchange of gifts and shared joy, finds the country devastated by Russian attacks, the cities without electricity, without water, deprived of basic goods. Even if there are Christmas lights kept in a drawer, they are not lit to decorate the Christmas tree, but to have some light in their homes.
These days, our thoughts are on the children of Ukraine. Their most beautiful, most carefree years were swept away by the war. They lost a home, often a parent, sibling, friends, they were separated from their families, forced to seek refuge in other countries. They have forgotten to laugh. They live with fear, insecurity, uncertainty. And when they ask, they only ask for two gifts from Santa Claus, for the war to end and for their fathers to come home.
The big why, which torments the innocent souls of Ukraine’s children, may never be answered. Wounds may not heal. But Ukrainians are determined not to let the war steal Christmas away from their children. The big tree of “Invincible Ukraine” in the heart of Kyiv, decorated with doves of peace, lit with yellow and blue lights in the colors of the country, with the emblem of the golden trident at the top, is the response to the violence of the invaders. And if this image is not enough to nullify the pain of an unjust and unprovoked war, it can, however, fill hearts with hope and bring, finally, to the lips of the children who have suffered so much, a smile.”
