Economou to SKAI: There is no need for extreme treatment or panic for China

“Understanding the context of the next election – that is, the fact that in order for a stable, solid Government to emerge, a Government like the one that a country like Greece must have in an environment of international instability, two elections will be needed – from Spring onwards it is possible that the election procedures will begin” the government representative Yannis Oikonomou pointed out to SKAI 100.3.

“What is important politically and institutionally is that Kyriakos Mitsotakis was absolutely consistent with what he had said in this part as well. That the elections will be held at the end of the four-year term, as close as possible to the end of the term of the Government. We persistently said that the elections will be held at the end of the four-year period and there was strong doubt about this. We were saying that we will not play institutionally with the elections, there will be no change in the electoral law. The Prime Minister proved his consistency in this as well, his commitment to the institutional functioning of the basic procedures of our Republic”, emphasized Mr. Economou.

Regarding the ballot process, he clarified that the discussion has been going on for a long time. Announcements of names of executives who were not MPs, for the district in which they will be active, have started for about 8-9 months. And in fact, when this process started, some people said that in order to announce names, the elections are close.

As he pointed out, “the New Democracy ballots, in any case, are to a very large extent completed, complete, in the sense that the members of the Parliamentary Group will be candidates again. But there will always be a strong dose of renewal. New faces who will be tested in the arena of politics, who will claim the trust of their fellow citizens. We will be completely ready in good time and in the next period, as we get closer to Spring, the announcements of new people who will join this effort will increase”.

“The Government has a relationship of trust with society. This trust has been built on the policy that the Government has taken care to implement and that has led to Greece being very resistant to the crises we are facing. In the policy that opened roads for the citizens, in all that has brought the Greek citizen to live much better today than he lived in the period 2015-2019. A relationship that shows us that we need to improve, not hide problems under the carpet and bravely take on the cost and responsibility. Everything counts. The question, however, is which Government, which Prime Minister, which model of governance is what a country like Greece needs in the times we live in. This is the reality. The Government invests in its policy, in the results it brings, in its performance, but also in the perspective that every Greek woman and every Greek has for tomorrow” he pointed out.

Regarding the EU measures for travelers from China, Yannis Oikonomou noted that “we are monitoring the matter. There is no need for extreme treatment or panic. It is a controlled situation. We will adopt, I imagine, part of these recommendations, we will keep our minds and so we will move forward, the world, the planet, between them and our country”.

“In any case, our country was far ahead in dealing with the pandemic throughout the previous period and especially when things were much more difficult. Today, it has many more “weapons” to feel safe and not to panic, nor to be terrified that we may return to conditions like the ones we experienced in the previous two or three years,” the government representative pointed out.

Regarding the treatment of the global phenomenon with drugs, he emphasized that “the assessment is that the phenomenon will be temporary. It is connected to the lack of raw materials, the increased demand and obviously the outbreak of viruses that we have on a global level. One has to be a complete partisan fanatic not to realize the global dimension of the problem. And he is a very big hypocrite if he does not understand that the moves made by the Government have helped us so that we face a problem on a much smaller scale than the rest of the world, than the rest of Europe. If one takes a look at what is happening in America, in France, in Germany, in Italy, one realizes that our country is dealing with this problem even now with much greater competence. The domestic pharmaceutical industry, due to the support we provided throughout the previous period, makes up for these shortages with generic drugs. All the necessary actions have been taken by the Ministry of Health, at an organizational level, in Medical Associations, in pharmacies. The EOF will inform what the substitutes may be. We banned parallel exports very early with very severe penalties. We take all necessary measures so that there are no shortages that cannot be replaced. All indications are that it is a problem which will be temporary. With a method, with a plan, with composure, as we have done in all the crises we have managed, we are facing this too”.

“Greece is cool and ready to handle any challenge” stated the government representative. “The policy we have implemented throughout the previous period shows that the country is both calm and ready to manage any challenge. Greece is not threatened, not panicked, not terrorized. It has nothing to fear because of a policy that has shielded it defensively, strengthened its deterrence capacity and broadened the reach of our views around the world, to allies, to partners, to great powers. We are cool. We are in absolute readiness, with efficiency to manage every challenge always within the framework of international legality and always absolutely unyielding in what concerns our sovereign rights and our national sovereignty”.
