“History will judge the Constantine of public life” declared the prime minister, judging the decision to bury the former king as a private person correct

At the funeral of the late King Constantine on Monday, the Prime Minister spoke from Alexandroupoli.

“The government took a very specific decision that I believe is absolutely correct, that the former king be buried as a private person and not as a former head of state, because quite simply he was the head of state of the Kingdom of Greece which no longer exists. And we must not forget that he had lost his Greek citizenship. However, this funeral will be held with dignity and with the ritual imposed by its very historical path,” said the prime minister.

The Prime Minister also stated: “With his death, the formal epilogue of a chapter that has been definitively closed with the referendum of 1974 is now being written on a human level, and history now has its say, which I believe will judge Konstantinos fairly but also severely.” He will judge the Konstantinos of public life, because for the man Konstantinos we are already accompanied by sadness and respect in the face of the loss of life itself,” the prime minister characteristically stated.

Asked how he sees the “tensions” that arose after the government’s decision to bury the former king as a private person, the prime minister replied that “I don’t see tensions, but a historical upsetting of the role of the historical figure of Constantine, which may be useful for the younger generations”.
