The Market Pass (shopping card) will be given without any purchase obligation, as noted by the Deputy Minister of Development and Investments, Nikos Papathanasis.

He said that “accuracy eats away at citizens’ income” and added that “we cannot cover 100% of the increases in the market but with targeted measures we boost income of our most vulnerable fellow citizens”.

Regarding the household basket, he said that the prices announced today show that 89% of the products had stable prices, in 6% we had a decrease and in 5% an increase and added that from the first moment that the household basket was implemented before 12 weeks, its average price is lower today.

Mr. Papathanasis, speaking to ANT1 and answering related questions about the accuracy of food, said that “we cannot put a price because there may be shortages on the shelves” and regarding the Market Pass, he said how the money will be given to the beneficiaries without having to make purchases.

Finally, among other things, the deputy minister defended the Government’s decision to proceed with targeted measures to support citizens, such as the shopping card and not horizontal measures such as the VAT reduction, giving as an example that with the Market Pass a 4-member family will have a benefit of 52 euros, while if we had a 7% VAT reduction, the benefit for the family would be 32 euros.
