The now strained Greek-German relations in an era of revisionism is highlighted in DW by the President of the Republic.

The confirmation of the dear Greek-German relations in an era of revisionism is highlighted in DW by President of the Republic. Through dialogue, a solution to war reparations can be found, he says.

The confirmation of the close relations between Greece and Germany at the highest political and diplomatic level, which are demonstrated in practice by the frequent visits and contacts between Athens and Berlin in recent months, wanted to be underlined by Berlin in an exclusive interview with DW, the President of of Democracy Katerina Sakellaropoulou. It is essentially an upgrade of bilateral relations after the difficult years of the euro crisis, based on the “shared vision” with Germany within Europe.

In a comprehensive interview in the heavy shadow of the war in Ukraine and while the end of the bloodshed remains uncertain, the Greek president explains why Europe must continue to support Ukraine and believes that the answer to the perpetrators of this war will let the law and international justice finally give, possibly with the establishment of a Special Court for the crimes committed on Ukrainian soil.

“Agreement” with Steinmeier against Turkish revisionism

The PtD presented once again in Berlin Greece’s positions towards Turkish provocation and conveyed the following message to both its German counterpart Frank Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Soltz: “Greece seeks dialogue with Turkey – But this presupposes respect for rules of international law and the law of the sea. There can be no dialogue with rhetorical threats and inflammatory phrases.”

As he reports to DW, “there is complete agreement with the German president in this regard” and emphasizes that Chancellor Olaf Scholz, top German officials and the EU have now clearly realized that “Greece’s positions are completely in accordance with international law”

“The burdens of the past do not disappear unilaterally”

During her contacts with both the German president and the chancellor, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou raised again the issue of war reparations as well as the mortgage loan. “Greece has submitted its own request for war reparations and the occupation loan. Greece’s position is stable (…) Germany has given its own answer”, he says, among other things.

He underlines, in closing, that “the burdens of the past are there, they do not disappear unilaterally, but in modern societies differences are resolved through dialogue. A solution could be found in the future, with dialogue and a good mood.” As she emphasizes, “the legal issues have been raised but it is a purely political issue.”
