Skrekas: High expectations from the Greek fields

“If exploitable deposits are indeed found from the planned drilling, they could fill the gap in Europe’s energy supply”

Environment and Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas spoke of “high expectations” from hydrocarbon research in the maritime area of Crete, adding that if exploitable deposits are indeed identified from the planned drilling, they could cover the gap in Europe’s energy supply.

As it became known on the sidelines of the event for the presentation of the new corporate identity of the Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company (EDEFYEP), the seismic surveys carried out in the areas west and south-west of Crete on behalf of ExxonMobil and Helleniq Energy (formerly ELPE) expected to be completed by the end of February. This will be followed by the interpretation of the data and, if the results are encouraging, exploratory drilling in 2025. At the same time, negotiations are underway for the possible entry of new investors into the research and exploitation schemes.

Developments are also recorded in the area of Ioannina, where Energean is conducting the investigations. Yesterday the Region of Epirus put into public consultation the Environmental Impact Study for the “Exploratory drilling “Epiros 1” in the Municipality of Litsa of D.E. Molosson.

In the context of the event, the president of EDEFEP, Rikard Scoufias, noted that in a period of less than a year, 7 seismic surveys were completed, an achievement that is high even by international standards, while only two were done in the previous ten years.

The managing director of EDEYEP, Aristophanes Stefatos, emphasized that the company will build bridges for a more sustainable future, alongside the historical obligation to utilize our national wealth with respect for the environment. EDEYEP’s new identity reflects the expansion of its responsibilities, beyond hydrocarbon research into underground carbon dioxide storage and the promotion of investments in offshore wind farms.
