High-level meeting with religious leaders from across Europe to discuss the war in Ukraine
European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas today hosted a high-level meeting with religious leaders from across Europe to discuss the war in Ukraine and its impact on the lives of European citizens.
The vice-president of the European Parliament, Otmar Karas, participated via video message, while the special envoy for the promotion of freedom of religion or belief outside the EU, Frans van Daal, also took part.
Mr. Schinas said that “on the day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust, we remember the lessons that history teaches us. This year’s memorial day has a special meaning. Russian aggression against Ukraine is an attack on our core European values and calls into question the very foundation of our European way of life. Our meeting was an opportunity to hear the views of our religious leaders and to discuss ways of dealing with the challenges posed by the war in Ukraine.”
The eight religious leaders who participated in the meeting discussed, among other things, the EU policy on migration and asylum, the energy crisis and its social consequences and their impact on European architecture.
