The government aims for this specific provision to receive the widest possible parliamentary consensus, even though it can “pass” with 151 votes.
Today, Thursday, the government is expected to submit to Parliament the legislative regulation that will block the participation of Ilias Kasidiaris’ party in the elections.
The regulation will put a “brake” on Kasidiaris’ efforts – through a virtual change in the leadership of the party – to enter the elections.
The amendment would have come to the Parliament from the previous week, however the motion of censure of SYRIZA “froze” all the parliamentary procedures, as a result of which the matter goes further back.
The provision is based on a previous one from 2021, which explicitly states that leaders and parties who have been convicted in the first instance of participation in a criminal organization cannot be declared candidates in the upcoming elections.
The government aims for this specific provision to receive the widest possible parliamentary consensus, even though it can “pass” with 151 votes.
The regulation that will come, however, will not only concern Kasidiaris’ party, as the law is expected, under conditions, to also apply to Golden Dawn, whose trial continues at the Court of Appeal, but its operation has not been suspended.
