As the Prime Minister pointed out on Twitter, “from now on, organizations whose essential leader is someone who has been convicted as a criminal will not be able to participate in the electoral process.”
“From now on, groups whose essential leader is someone who has been convicted as a criminal will not be able to participate in the electoral process,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a post on Twitter about the amendment submitted to Parliament, which prevents convicted criminals from claim the vote of the citizens as formal or informal heads of political formations.
“This will obviously be judged by the Supreme Court, which is also the competent one according to the Constitution to announce the candidate parties” noted Mr. Mitsotakis. The prime minister also emphasized that it is “a very important provision for the protection of democracy from criminal organizations and persons. A provision similar to that which is already in force in several European countries and aims to protect normality and constitutional freedoms”.
Henceforth, groups whose essential leader is someone who has been convicted as a criminal will not be able to participate in the electoral process. This will obviously be judged by the Supreme Court, which is also the competent one according to the Constitution to announce the candidate parties.
