Trip of Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos to the Island – Meeting with his British counterpart Ben Wallace
In a short time, the Defense Ministers signed the Joint Vision Statement between Greece and the United Kingdom Nikos Panagiotopoulos and Ben Wallaceat Portsmouth Naval Base in southern England.
According to diplomatic sources, the said Declaration, among other things, foresees the strengthening of the defense cooperation of the two sides with joint trainings of military personnel as well as staff. It also foresees joint exercises, while it will define a new framework for cooperation to deal with modern threats, such as hybrid warfare and cyber-attacks.
At the same time, the Declaration will make a clear reference to the mutual respect of the principles of International Law and the Law of the Sea. As provided for in the agreement, an echelon of the two Ministries of Defense will meet once a year to update it.
The signing of the agreement will take place on the flagship warship of the British navy Diamond D34. It is the third in a series of highly capable Type 45 destroyers and one of the most advanced warships in the world. The Greek minister is accompanied by a small delegation of staff and officials of the ministry.
Moreover, this morning Nikos Panagiotopoulos participated in the inspection of an honorary ceremony that took place at the famous Horse Guards Parade in the center of London. There, among other things, the British military band played the marching band of the Navy, thus paying respects to the Greek minister.
In the private meeting held by the two ministers shortly afterwards, they discussed matters concerning the strengthening of Greek-British cooperation in the context of NATOin view of the meeting of the defense ministers of the North Atlantic Alliance that will take place in Brussels on February 14 and 15.
As a top government source told APE-MPE, Messrs. Panagiotopoulos and Wallace have an excellent relationship, as they often talk on the phone about matters of common interest such as the developments in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean, the war in Ukraine, etc. “This trip confirms the good relationship that the two ministers have developed in recent years, but also the practical strengthening of diplomatic cooperation between the two countries”, a government source pointed out to APE-MPE.
