Voridis: SYRIZA’s argumentation against the amendment is identical to Golden Dawn’s argumentation

The Minister of the Interior, Makis Voridis, requested, among other things, the cooperation of all parties in preventing criminals from entering the Parliament

The cooperation of all parties in preventing the entry into the House of Criminals asked the Minister of the Interior Makis Voridis regarding the amendment by which it is established as an obstacle to electoral participation in a party or a combination of collaborating parties, anyone who has been convicted to any degree of a criminal organization.

Commenting on the position of the official opposition leader Alexis Tsipras attributed to him that “your argumentation against the amendment is identical to the argumentation of Golden Dawn”. Because, as he argued, “what we have heard from Golden Dawn and Kasidiaris’s party is that this arrangement is coming for our votes. That she is not honest but vote-seeking. That you bring it up because you want to exclude us now that you’ve seen the polls and your motive is political. And the delegitimization of those who bring it.” “An argument that is identical to the one we heard today from Mr. Tsipras. He asked himself, addressing the main opposition party: “Really, this is what you came to tell us today?”.

Mr. Voridis said that “this regulation came in 2021, which was voted for by SYRIZA Mrit is almost identical in content and then you had no objection”. Then, he added “didn’t the government have the same motivations that the main opposition party attributes to it? Weren’t we far-right then? Back then, we didn’t want to steal the votes, and today we want it?”

The minister asked “to speak clearly” saying that “Golden Dawn was not condemned because it is Nazi or racist, but because its natural persons committed criminal acts. The court’s decision, indeed, recognizes that their motivation was fascist and racist. Except, however, this concerns the element in possession and its basic offense is their criminal offense, that of the criminal organization.”

He pointed out that what the amendment adds to our existing legislation is “the concept of real leadership”. Responding to the argument that proof of real leadership is difficult to establish from the Areio Pagos, he said that “if I remove this element, then the regulation becomes useless in terms of its goal as there is no Kasidiaris leadership in this party today, formally he has changed her”.

He disagreed with SYRIZA’s proposal to define the offenses as “fascist and racist”, saying that if we leave the detection of political and ideological motivations of a party, then the back door is opened for the future legislator and for other parties. Therefore, you open the risk you say”.

Mr. Voridis clarified that paragraph b of the amendment will remain as it is. Criminals cannot impersonate party leaders.

Regarding paragraph c of the amendment, the issues of clarity observed by the Scientific Service of the Parliament in its report, the minister said that “we will cure them with a legislative improvement. He noted that with the wording of the paragraph as it is in the amendment, the provision will not fail in the CoE, on the contrary, if the proposal of SYRIZA is adopted, then it will fail immediately and then we will have the descent into the elections of such parties with a constitutional stamp.

At the same time, he pointed out that with the extrajudicial letter sent to the Speaker of the Parliament by Ilias Kasidiaris against the amendment, it is evidence for the Areopagus who is the real leader of this party.

Finally, Mr. Voridis asked the official opposition party “is it possible, with what you are proposing, that you are the one who wants Golden Dawn to enter the elections?” and added: “I cannot believe that such a legally sound proposal from the SYRIZA amendment is made out of ignorance. So someone else is your motive.”

The minister stated that “there is no possibility that the ND will get any of these votes, precisely because it is bringing this provision”. “ND does not turn a blind eye to anti-systemic voters,” he concluded.
