Satisfaction in Athens with the conclusions of the European Council on immigration – “Adopts basic Greek positions”

The government appears satisfied with the conclusions of the European Council on Migration, according to government sources.

As the same sources stated at the end of the informal Summit of the European Union in Brussels, the Council adopts basic Greek positions and the EU recognizes that the problem is European and that it needs a European response.

It also recognizes the need for effective control of the EU’s external borders, at the time, referring to land and sea borders and welcomes the efforts of frontline countries to guard the EU’s external borders.

As the government sources add, the text of the conclusions of the European Council declares its support for FRONTEX and specifically for its main mission, which is to support member states in the protection of external borders, the fight against cross-border crime and the strengthening of returns.

In fact, it calls for the immediate activation of community resources to strengthen the capabilities and infrastructure of border control, means of surveillance, including aerial ones.

The same sources note that regarding the issue of returns, the text of the conclusions underlines the possibility of imposing visa-related measures against third countries that do not cooperate on the issue of returns.

It focuses on the need for effective returns to the countries of origin and finally condemns the attempts to use the Migration Service as a tool for political purposes.
