As he stated, Greece’s effort to help the Turkish people and Turkish society to overcome this great blow does not stop here.
“Greece will do everything it can to support Turkey in this difficult time, either bilaterally or in the context of its EU membership“
This was emphasized by O Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias during his visit to Turkey which is being tested, on the sidelines of the deadly earthquakes that hit the south of the country, killing thousands of people and causing widespread damage in ten provinces.
As he stated, Greece’s effort to help the Turkish people and Turkish society to overcome this great blow does not stop here.
At the same time, he pointed out that in addition to the above, he wishes to absolutely subscribe to what his Turkish counterpart said earlier: That we do not need to wait for natural disasters to improve our relations.
I conveyed to @MevlutCavusoglu the 🇬🇷 Government & people’s heartfelt condolences for the hundreds of deaths of our fellow human beings in 🇹🇷, as well as my admiration for our rescuers. I agree that there is no need to wait for natural disasters to occur to improve our relations. pic.twitter.com/THkKuokjwz

“First of all, I would like to convey to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, my friend Mevlüt ÇavuÅŸoÄŸlu, to the Turkish Government and to the Turkish people, the most sincere condolences of the Mitsotakis Government and the entire Greek people for the thousands of losses of our people after the two devastating earthquakes“, he characteristically said.
“I would also like to thank Mevlüt ÇavuÅŸoÄŸlu for the very warm words he reserved for the efforts of the Greek rescuers and for his warm reference to our presence here,” he added.
“We are especially happy for the human lives saved by the Greek rescuers who tried here in Turkey, as well as for the many lives saved by the European rescuers, because we had the opportunity together with Mr. ÇavuÅŸoÄŸlu to visit the Austrians, the Dutch and Icelandic lifeguards. From what we were told, 205 lives were saved by them, including the Greeks“, he said.
The Dendias statement in detail
First of all, I would like to convey to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, my friend Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, to the Turkish Government and to the Turkish people, the most sincere condolences of the Mitsotakis Government and the entire Greek people for the thousands of losses of our people after the two devastating earthquakes.
I would also like to thank Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu for the very warm words he reserved for the efforts of the Greek rescuers and for his warm reference to our presence here.
We are particularly happy for the human lives saved by the Greek rescuers who tried here in Turkey, as well as for the many lives saved by the European rescuers, because we had the opportunity together with Mr. Çavuşoğlu to visit the Austrians, the Dutch and Icelandic lifeguards. From what we were told, 205 lives were saved by them, including the Greeks.
But I would like to clarify that Greece’s effort to help the Turkish people and Turkish society to overcome this great blow does not stop here. I have a mandate from my Prime Minister, Mr. Mitsotakis, to assure that Greece will do everything it can to support Turkey at this difficult time, either bilaterally or in the context of its membership in the EU.
Beyond that, I would like to fully subscribe to what Mevlüt said earlier: That we don’t have to wait for natural disasters to improve our relations.
In closing, I would like to express the pride I feel because my fellow rescuers have helped Turkish society and the Turkish people in this difficult time. And I sincerely thank both Mevlüt and the Turkish Government for the warmth of my reception at this very difficult time for them.
