After attack he received in Exarchia on Friday nightthe secretary of MERA25 Yanis Varoufakis states in the newspaper Ta Nea that “our thoughts, both personal and collective, must be with the 57 dead of Tempe”.

He adds that he will not allow his injury to be used to shift the spotlight away from the 57 dead.

“This is not only an unimaginable tragedy but also a unique opportunity,” he added.

The statement of Yanis Varoufakis to the News:

“Our minds, both personal and collective, must be with the 57 dead of Tempe. This is not only an unimaginable tragedy but also a unique opportunity.

The young people protesting across the country are determined to reject the Greece of corruption, dependency, exploitation, nepotism, oligarchy, privatism, statism. They know that everything can be different.

This combination of mourning and hope is not allowed to be overshadowed, to be disguised, by any secondary matter.

To the best of my ability, I will not allow my injury to be used to shift the spotlight away from our 57 dead and from the hope that today’s youth movement gives us for a better tomorrow.

Unlike 57, I’m recovering. Today, I will testify to the investigator. Then I will wait for the Justice to speak, then I will take my position. Unlike Mr. Theodorikakos, and even though (unlike Mr. Minister) I saw who injured me, I will not replace the investigator, the prosecutor, the judges and the jury.

I close by returning to our historical responsibility of this moment: To honor our 57 dead. And to help the young children out there to build the new Greece they deserve.”
