For a “fruitful and cordial” meeting of the Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni with Kyriakos Mitsotakis on the sidelines of the work of the European Council, diplomatic sources cited by RAI News spoke.

It is noted that initially a tripartite meeting was planned, on Friday morning, with the participation of the Prime Minister of Portugal Antonio Costa, but the Portuguese prime minister ultimately did not attend, due to a last-minute setback.

Answering a question from SKAI, the prime minister said that he invited Georgia Meloni “to visit Athens before the elections to discuss the whole common agenda. He accepted the offer. In this we will specify the proposals for the fiscal rules, we will discuss the challenges of immigration because Italy is also on the front line and a victim of traffickers who exploit human lives.”

»We will also discuss how the Italian government, through Trenitalia, will be able to support in a more active and meaningful way the restart of the Greek Railways. OSE has been sold in 2018 to an Italian company. We can build a better railway together. The company will invest in better trains, and we will invest in the network.”

It is noted that the tripartite meeting of Greece, Italy and Portugal was planned following the initiative of the Greek Prime Minister, with the aim of shaping a united front on the rules of economic governance ahead of today’s “Eurosummit”, which will be attended by ECB president Christine Lagarde and the president of the Eurogroup, in Brussels.

On the other hand, Mrs. Meloni, who wants to play a more active role in the European process, is looking for interlocutors, having already had an open line with Kyriakos Mitsotakis for some time, with whom they also spoke by phone before the Summit.
