The side of Alexis Georgoulis “sees” political ramifications and expediencies in the case, as can be seen from the yesterday’s announcement by his Belgian lawyersthrough which they informed that they did not receive access to the case file, as the case is at the preliminary investigation stage.

The Belgian lawyers connect the “timetable of the investigation” of the Belgian authorities with the fact that in a few weeks in Greece we have elections, thus attempting to give a political tone to the case, even implying that the process is directed, with the aim of causing political damage to him and, indirectly, for SYRIZA.

In their statement, the Belgian lawyers say that Alexis Georgoulis “cannot help but be concerned about the timing of this investigation and is deeply sorry. Indeed, while the events and the complaint date back to 2020, it is unfortunate that only three years later this complaint is being made public – just a few weeks before the elections in Greece”.

As for the heavy accusations of rape and abuse, Alexis Georgoulis, through his lawyers, categorically denies them: “Mr. Georgoulis refutes in every respect the accusations of Mrs. Chronopoulou”, while it is noted that he requested the lifting of his immunity “in order to plenty of light on the case”.

The announcement states the following:

“At the beginning of April 2023, Alexis Georgoulis was surprised to learn, on the occasion of a request to lift his parliamentary immunity, that Mrs. Chronopoulou had filed a lawsuit against him accusing him of indecent acts that allegedly took place in January 2020 in Brussels. These claims are officially disputed. Mr. Georgoulis refutes Mrs. Chronopoulou’s accusations from every point of view.

Alexis Georgoulis requested the lifting of his parliamentary immunity in order to shed any light on this case. He has complete confidence in the Belgian authorities to prove the truth. Through his lawyers, he has requested that the investigative services listen to him in order to explain these accusations. It awaits the response to this request, remains at the disposal of the Belgian authorities and hopes that this can be done as soon as possible.

Mr. Georgoulis cannot help but worry about the timing of this investigation and is deeply sorry. Indeed, while the events and the complaint date back to 2020, it is unfortunate that only 3 years later this complaint is being made public – exactly a few weeks before the elections in Greece.

It should be noted that Belgian law enshrines the confidentiality of the investigation and does not allow the content of a preliminary investigation to be made public.

Mr. Georgoulis and his lawyer did not have access to the file and no further comments will be made at this stage.”
