Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias had a telephone conversation with the EU’s high representative for foreign policy and security policy matters, Josep Borrell, on Friday. They discussed the developments in Sudan and close coordination for future operations to release Greeks and other EU citizens from the country, as soon as circumstances allow, as noted in a post by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Earlier, the Foreign Minister had sent a letter to Josep Borrell regarding the extremely worrying situation in Sudan.
In the letter, Nikos Dendias noted his particular concern for the safety of the Greeks, including the 2 injured, and other European citizens in Sudan, mentioning also the efforts of our country for their protection and their release when conditions allow, according to diplomatic sources. The Minister of Foreign Affairs underlined the importance of the coordination of the EU member states and the primary role of the High Representative in the context of the efforts for the immediate and safe release of the Greeks, as well as the other European citizens.
In addition, it informs about Greece’s position regarding the need for an immediate ceasefire and reconciliation dialogue between all warring parties to ensure the stability and unity of Sudan.
Finally, it emphasized the paramount importance of Sudan’s security and territorial integrity to security in the Horn of Africa.
