The polls in the territory are open from 7 am in order for the Greek electors to vote for the new Parliament.

About 9.8 million voters are registered in the electoral rolls, of which almost 400,000 new voters have the right to vote for the first time.

It is recalled that the Greeks living abroad and are registered in the special foreign electoral rolls exercised their right to vote, yesterday Saturdayin the electoral divisions established in 35 countries.

Citizens who turn 17 within 2023 and are registered in the electoral rolls of the municipalities have the right to vote.

Based on the Constitution and electoral legislation, exercising the right to vote is mandatory. Exempted from the obligation are those over 70 years old, those who will be abroad on voting day, those who cannot travel for health reasons and voters who have been registered in the special electoral rolls for hetero-residents, but no polling station was established due to non-filling of the number of at least 40 non-resident voters of the same basic electoral district.

For the address of the polling station where they are voting, the interested parties they can be updated from the digital platform “Learn where you vote” on the website of the Ministry of the Interior, https://mpp.ypes.gov.gr/#/, which is also accessible from Gov.gr. The information appears after completing the fields Surname, First Name, Father’s Name, Year of Birth, Mother’s Name (optional), or only the fields Surname and Special Electoral Number. Alternatively, they can be informed by the telephone lines 2131361500 and 2131313800.

How voters are identified

Voters must bring their identity card or the relevant temporary certificate from the competent authority or their passport or driver’s license or the individual health book of all insurance funds. It is noted that “cut” ID cards and expired passports are also acceptable.

The identification of voters can also be done using the digital identity that is accessible through the government portal https://wallet.gov.gr.

During the identification of voters, it is possible that for some voters, due to errors or other causes, discrepancies between their information in the electoral roll and those of their police or service identity cards will be found.

Particularly:

a) The details of their registration in the electoral rolls do not completely coincide with the details of their police or official identity cards. In this case, the electors must present a certificate of identity, issued by the relevant mayor or any other document from which their identity can be derived and proven.

b) Women voters who have been registered in the electoral roll with their husband’s surname, while on their police ID card they are shown with their father’s surname or vice versa, or were registered in the electoral roll with their husband’s surname and after they divorced, they replaced their police identity card, changing their husband’s surname to their family name, without a corresponding correction of their data in the electoral roll.

In these cases, the verification of the real identity of the voters is possible by comparing the details of the electoral roll and the police identity card, so that it is not necessary to present other supporting documents. However, since it is not possible to verify their identity even by comparing the data, women voters must be provided with a similar proof document (e.g. marriage certificate).

Special space in polling stations for people with disabilities

Those who cannot wait outside the polling stations for a long time, such as pregnant women, the elderly, people with disabilities, patients, etc., as well as those who meet service needs, such as officers of the Armed Forces, the Hellenic Police or employees performing service for the elections, they must vote with absolute priority. For this purpose, they address the representative of the judicial authority or a member of the electoral committee, who are obliged to serve them.

For people with disabilities and mobility problems, a special reception area is planned for the first time, on the ground floor of each polling station. Upon the voter’s arrival at the venue, the judicial representative of the electoral division to which the voter belongs is informed and arrives there with all the ballots and the required file. If necessary, the voter enters the screen together with any accompanying person and also with the judicial representative. After the voter leaves the voting booth, the judicial representative takes the envelope containing the ballot paper chosen by the voter, takes it to the corresponding polling station and drops it into the ballot box.

Polls close at 7

The polls close at 7:00 p.m., while, in those polling stations where there are still queues of voters until that time, there is the possibility of extending the electoral process for up to two hours.

This is followed by the counting of votes at the level of combinations, and after its completion, each judicial representative transmits the result of his electoral division directly to the Ministry of the Interior via a tablet device. The same procedure is then followed with the preference crosses. In this way, the times of the first safe and the final result, as well as of the crossover, are significantly reduced. According to experts’ estimates, an image for over 10% of the territory will be available by 20:30, while by 22:00 it is expected that 80% – 90% of the election results nationwide will have been integrated.
