BBC: ND “for a handful of seats” does not ensure independence – Guardian: The difference of 20 points from the second party, SYRIZA, is something “rarely observed”
Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Greece have been the focus of much international media coverage, with most of them pointing out that the country is likely to go to the polls again, despite victory of New Democracy by a large margin.
The British BBC writes that “for a handful of seats” New Democracy does not secure an absolute majority in parliament. “The center-left opponent (of Prime Minister Mr. Mitsotakis), Alexis Tsipras, congratulated him, as his party is heading for a bad result, with only 20%. Despite the centre-right’s big victory, it may choose to go to a second election rather than seek a coalition (government).” The network also refers to the fact that the opinion polls underestimated the big difference between the first two parties, while pointing out that PASOK also emerged as the winner of the elections, which gathers a percentage of more than 12%.
The British newspaper Guardian also writes that “the parliamentary elections in Greece did not produce a winner, although the center-right party of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis gathered 41% of the vote with more than 70% of the ballots counted”. The newspaper points out that the difference of 20 points from the second party, SYRIZAis something that is “rarely observed” after the fall of the junta in 1974, while he also notes that even in Crete, the “stronghold of the Socialists”, New Democracy did “surprisingly well”. It also hosts the statement of Giorgos Gerapetritis that “the Greek people voted for the future, they voted for future generations”.
The German Agency (DPA), in one of its first responses, broadcast the sixth poll, noting that “despite its strong lead, the New Democracy is not certain that it will be able to form a governing coalition due to the changes in the country’s electoral law ».
“Coalition governments are rare and often unsuccessful in Greece. If no government is formed within 10 days, new elections will be called for July,” the agency added.
The New Republic is headed for a “sweeping victory”, writes Reuters, based on the first results. The result, the agency says, gives a boost to current Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, although according to forecasts he will not gather an absolute majority in Parliament.
The French newspapers Le Monde and Liberation also write, citing the partial results, that Kyriakos Mitsotakis, although his party leads by a margin, may have difficulty forming a stable government, because he will not have an absolute majority.
Agence France-Presse broadcast the sixth poll, the results as well as Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ declaration of a “political earthquake” and the fact that the citizens gave the order to the ND to govern autonomously.
“Governing conservatives are ahead in the election, but a second election is possible,” Politico headlines its article, based on the first six polls.
The Turkish Anadolu Agency also writes that New Democracy is winning the elections, citing the first, partial results, while also hosting an extensive photo report from the day of the elections.
For “clear victory” of Mr. Mitsotakis in the elections, the Spanish El Pais is also speaking, pointing out the greater than expected lead of New Democracy over SYRIZA, but also the rise of PASOK.
