Attestation and enforcement fine height 15,900 euros in the MeRA25 for illegal poster pollution with pre-election material – posters and leaflets – the Municipality of Athens proceeded.

Today, Friday, June 9, the municipality’s services found the placement of pre-election posters on Panepistimios, Akadimias, Ippokratous and Riga Feraios streets, as well as widespread dropping of leaflets and advertising forms.

It is the first time that such a fine has been imposed, as with the help of the Municipal Authority, a relevant provision was included in the Cleanliness Regulation that was updated and approved in 2022 by the Municipal Council.

It is recalled that the Municipality of Athens, with the official start of the pre-election period last May, had informed and invited all political parties and combinations participating in the elections to respect the provisions of the Law regarding the placement of pre-election booths in the public space, the posting banners, posters, giant posters, the dropping of leaflets and any other kind of promotional material.

During the pre-election period in May, in the few cases where a violation of the law was found, he had chosen, in good faith, to proceed with recommendations to the party officials.

Now, based on the Law governing the promotion of parties and candidates, as well as the Cleanliness Regulation of Athens, the municipal services are obliged not only to remove the illegally placed posters, but also to impose a monetary fine for the arbitrary pollution of the city.

It should be noted, finally, that since May, public spaces have been granted free of charge in which the parties have installed their pre-election booths, as well as 450 canopies for hanging their election materials.
