Dendias: Turkey to finally respect the rights of the Greek minority in Imbros, Tenedos and Istanbul

by

The message that Turkey must finally fully respect the rights of the Greek minority in Imvros, Tenedos and Istanbul, strictly implementing the Lausanne Treaty, was sent again by Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias during his greeting at the cutting of the Association’s pie for the new year, which took place online.

In particular, Nikos Dendias stressed that Turkey must fully comply with the provisions of Article 14 of the Lausanne Treaty on guarantees to the non-Muslim indigenous population, regarding the establishment of a system of local autonomy and self-government and the protection of persons and property.

At the same time, it called on the neighboring country to comply with international and European standards of respect for the rights of human beings and persons belonging to minorities, such as the Resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (1625 / 27.6.2008), on the property rights of the Greek minority in Imvros and Tenedos “.

He further assured that he personally and the services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to assist in their efforts to keep alive the collective memory of the Imbrians and to redress the injustices that the Imbrian Hellenism has suffered by the Turkish authorities. “We will continue to be by your side, utilizing every means at our disposal to achieve this goal” he made clear and noted: “We will continue, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, to take care of the staffing of the Greek schools in Imvros, and in your own efforts, they now cover all three levels of school education. Similarly, we will continue to assist in the establishment of new families on the island. “And we will, of course, continue at every opportunity to recall the commitments that Turkey has made and to highlight the injustices that exist in Imbrian Hellenism.”

In this regard, Nikos Dendias pointed out that “an undeniable example of our support is the visit in a few days of Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Katsaniotis to Imvros, where he will be given the opportunity to formulate a detailed picture on the ground and to consult on possible on the further improvement of the living conditions of our expatriates “.

The Foreign Minister made special reference to the “diverse work” displayed by the Imbrion Association for many decades, which, as he noted, has created the right conditions for many families to return to their ancestral homes. “With this important work, the historical Association of Imbrians contributes to the substantial revival of Imbrian Hellenism, which, we must always remember, when the Treaty of Lausanne was signed, constituted the vast majority of the island’s inhabitants,” said Nikos Dendias.

He also noted that the activities of the association are framed by the intense and in all directions activism, but also the constant interest in what is happening in Imbros, of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, July in origin. Undoubtedly, Nikos Dendias points out, the activism of the Ecumenical Patriarch, who completed 30 years of service on the Ecumenical Throne of the Holy Church of the Great Church last year, is an important guarantee for the further strengthening of the Imbrian Hellenism. As a guarantee, of course, are the arduous efforts of Metropolitan Imvros and Tenedos Kirillos, which contribute significantly to improving the living conditions of our expatriates, he added. Despite the favorable climate that has developed in recent years, these actions should continue. “In order to ensure their continuity, the Turkish authorities must do what is appropriate for them,” Dendias stressed.
