The immigration policy of the New Democracy government was mentioned in his post by the former Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Notis Mitarakis.

Mr. Mitarakis, taking stock of the days of the N.D. government, said that both goals that had been set in terms of immigration were achieved: The reduction of flows and the support of local societies.

Mr. Mitarakis’ comment in detail:

THE NEW REPUBLIC set two measurable goals in #immigration: Reducing flows and supporting local communities. We got them.

Out of 1,170,000 arrivals in 2015-2019, during our administration we had 75,000 in total, while we gave over 110 million euros for projects and compensation to local communities.

We showed that our country has land and sea borders and we can protect them. But we didn’t stop there. We closed a total of 88 structures and created new safe and modern facilities, both on the islands, to replace older and unsuitable ones like the disgrace of Moria. One of them is #Malakasa where the survivors of the shipwreck off Pylos are hosted.

Thus, from 92,000 residents in 121 structures we now have 11,000 in 33 structures. The new structures offer safe and dignified conditions to guests while fostering a sense of security in local communities.
