There are many scenarios for who will be with them when the meeting takes place, but also what orders they will give to their partners in order to restart Greek-Turkish contacts
The press in Turkey is dealing with the upcoming meeting of Kyriakos Mitsotakis with Tayyip Erdogan at the NATO Summit in Vilnius on July 11 and 12.
As SKAI correspondent Manolis Kostidis reports from Istanbulthere are many scenarios for who will be with them when the meeting takes place, but also what orders they will give to their partners in order to restart Greek-Turkish contacts.
As CNN TURK reports in its report: “They came out victorious again from the polls and said ‘hello’ to their new era and will meet at the NATO summit. 2023 was an election year on both sides of the Aegean. In Greece Mitsotakis as well as in Turkey Erdogan got the “visa” from their voters to start the new era of their governance. Greece and Turkey have recently managed to have mild relations. Now their leaders are preparing to meet at the NATO summit.
In fact, in recent years Greece and Turkey have experienced periods of high tension due to their differences in the Aegean and the Southern Mediterranean. Following the airspace and territorial waters violations suffered by Turkey, all contact between the leaders had ceased. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis last met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in March 2022 at the Vakhdetin residence. After the devastating earthquake of February 6, successive phone calls of support followed.”
Gerapetritis-Fidan phone call – They made an appointment at the NATO summit in Vilnius
Last night there was a communication between the two new Foreign Ministers Gerapetritis-Fidan and according to the announcements of the two sides, they made an appointment for Vilnius and “agreed to work for the improvement of the relations between the two countries”.
The White House is asking for calm waters in the Aegean
Also yesterday, the National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan communicated with Tayyip ErdoÄŸan’s adviser and told him that “continued stability in the Aegean is important” and asked him to keep things as they are.
Erdogan-Soltz telephone conversation
Meanwhile, Tayyip ErdoÄŸan is angry with what is happening in Sweden, who expressed his anger in the communication he had with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz who asked him to advance the issue of Sweden’s integration.
Erdogan told Soltz that it is “unacceptable to allow demonstrations and also the recruitment of terrorists in Sweden”, referring to a recent demonstration outside a mosque in Stockholm where a copy of the Koran was burned under the toleration of Swedish authorities who did not even intervene. As the Turkish media reports: Sweden burned its NATO visa.
