Within the day, the bill of the Ministry of the Interior, which will lift all restrictions on the vote of expatriate Greeks, will be put up for public consultation.

The goal is to have the draft law passed by the time Parliament closes for summer vacation. In order to “pass” the specific bill, an increased majority from the Parliament is required, i.e. 200 votes.

As stated by the Minister of the Interior Niki Kerameosthis is not a new procedure, but for the convenience of Greeks abroad, who are registered in the electoral rolls and therefore retain their right to vote.

Mrs. Kerameos also pointed out that the discussion with the other parties will begin immediately, speaking of a “historic opportunity”.

Specifically, the Minister of the Interior emphasized regarding the bill in an interview with Mega TV station: “We call on all 300 to vote for it. Historic opportunity and great responsibility that burdens every member of parliament beyond and above parties. The question of emigrants is not right, left, center. It is respect for the everywhere Hellenism,” noted Mrs. Kerameos.

Greeks who live permanently abroad and are registered in the electoral rolls amount to approximately 800,000. The provision is the same as the one brought by the ND government in 2021.

At that time, a total of 190 MPs from ND, PASOK-KINAL and Hellenic Solution voted for it. The specific parties, with the current political affiliations that have been formed within the Parliament, number 202 MPs. Number able to override the provision and remove all restrictions.
