“The government does not learn lessons from the past, nor does it prioritize the prevention and treatment of fires,” said the secretary of the SYRIZA PS Dionysis Kalamatianos, speaking to the radio station “To Kokkino Patras”. He said that despite the warnings of heat, winds and the risk of fire in certain places in the previous days, “the government has again failed to deal with the danger, as a result of which we once again have destruction of homes, property and the natural environment”. “Certainly, the climate crisis is present, but the question is what we do to deal with it,” he added.

He spoke of responsibilities for the “lack of prevention” and “for the lack of sufficient operational means and infrastructure, modern equipment and cleaning of biomass and preparation of operational coordination”. He commented that although the prime minister spoke of compensations, “there is the bad recent experience from the 2021 fires in Ilia, Attica and Evia”. He pointed out that SYRIZA PS has submitted a bill to Parliament for the creation of a National Civil Protection Authority, but the proposal was not accepted.

Speaking about the processes in SYRIZA, he said, among other things, that “we express a comprehensive proposal, both parliamentary and party, which we believe leads to a new vision, to a new SYRIZA PS”. He added that Alexis Tsipras’ bequest for an address from the Left to the progressive Center will be confirmed in the upcoming SYRIZA PS conference proceedings and that “we appeal to the citizens to participate in SYRIZA-PS, not as mere visitors, but actively, in order to cooperate and co-shape the great majority progressive faction”.
