For an attempt to silence the scientists by transferring the EMY and the National Observatory to the control of the Civil Protection “so that they do not expose his government with their warnings”, says the press representative of the SYRIZA PS, Stergios Kalpakis.

“We thought we had heard everything from Mr. Mitsotakis in his speech yesterday, but today he surpassed all precedents in disclaiming responsibility. Without a trace of shame, he declared that the staff state functioned in Thessaly. That is, if it did not work, what would be the magnitude of the disaster?”, says Mr. Kalpakis, in his statement regarding the press conference of the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

He comments that “after – according to Mr. Mitsotakis – his government did everything right, it blamed the scientists, who had timely warned about the intensity of the bad weather, and announced that EMY and the National Observatory are being transferred to the control of Civil Protection”. As he argues, “it is obvious that Mr. Mitsotakis has no intention of cooperating with scientists in dealing with extreme weather phenomena, but his only goal is to silence them, so that they do not expose his government with their warnings.” “This is the so-called modernist and liberal Mr. Mitsotakis,” he adds.

In addition, Mr. Kalpakis notes that Mr. Mitsotakis “admitted again today that his government is incapable of guaranteeing the safety of society, which is why it is making the insurance of all homes mandatory.” “In other words,” he emphasizes, “the whole of society will continue to sink into insecurity, but only those who have to pay will be compensated.”

He also points out that “where the whole society was left speechless is when it heard Mr. Mitsotakis say that he does not accept a capitalism without limits”, adding that “the prime minister who has left the profiteering unchecked, who has not taxed the surplus profits of billions of euros and now he brings 13 hours of work a day, trying to make black white.”

In conclusion, the press representative of SYRIZA underlines that “three months after his re-election to the government of the country, the policy of Mr. Mitsotakis is unable to guarantee the safety of the citizens and the treatment of the major problems of everyday life”.
