The foreign minister’s intervention at the ministerial meeting of the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council in Muscat
A five-point plan on the crisis in the Middle East, proposed by Mr Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis in his intervention in European Union – Gulf Cooperation Council Ministerial Meeting, held in Muscat. In fact, he expressed his belief that “it is a matter of immediate action and we must join our forces in this direction”.
He also condemned all forms of terrorism and violence, regardless of nationality, religion, race or any other criteria and declared: “We must be resolutely committed to ensure that peace and stability remain in the region and that there is no spillover of the crisis.” .
Specifically describing the five points, Mr. Gerapetritis said:
– Firstunanimous condemnation of violence, terrorism and inhumane treatment.
-Secondlyimmediate release of all hostages and abductees.
-Thirdlyavoidance of any aggressive action against civilians.
-Fourth, ensuring humanitarian aid and humanitarian corridors so that no lives are put at risk.
-And fifth, convening a special Summit on the situation in the Middle East with the participation of the United Nations, the European Union, the Arab League and the two parties involved, Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
Further, he referred to climate crisis, underlining the need to coordinate efforts to protect the environment and the energy transition, for civil protection. And in light of the COP28 that will take place in the region in a few months, he added.
Finally, talk about one “extremely difficult summer across the Mediterranean basin with widespread fires and then widespread flooding”noting that many people lost their lives because of these catastrophic phenomena.”
