Discussion with young people about its topic The President of PASOK – Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis, had a student shelter on Sunday afternoon. in the context of his visit to Ioannina.

“All these years I have found that the biggest problem that students face is that of housing. In combination with the fact that the expenses for education are constantly decreasing and questions are raised for the small and medium family about whether and to what extent it is worth it for the Greek student to come and study at the Greek university” noted a post-doctoral researcher of the University of Ioannina.

Then, taking the floor, a student emphasized: “We are asking for two things. Sustainable rents. A child cannot leave his place of origin with these rentals”, underlining that a “ceiling on platforms for a shorter rental period is required because the prices are rising”, saying, at the same time, that “there could also be relief for the parents of of children studying in other cities”.

When asked how many student residences there are in the city of Ioannina, the students said that it is the two existing residences they have in total 300 single rooms and an additional 200 rooms for rent in hotels for a total of approximately 35,000 students.

Mr. Androulakis, comparing the PASOK – Movement for Change proposal for social housing with that of the New Democracy government, said: “The Government included 100 housing units in the Recovery Fund, 70 in Athens and 30 in Thessaloniki. And they have also made a program, ”My House”, which is not for rent, it is for purchase. That is, a young couple goes and takes a low-interest loan and buys a house. The problem is this: The price per square meter has risen so much that it is very difficult to find a house with this money. But we say something else. Why invest in a policy that is new ownership when the issue is how can a country that has few houses for rent not ban the Golden Visa? Ethey come from third countries and buy houses to get the visa. Second, to put limits on short-term rentals: that is, you can’t have 10-15 AirBnBs. You’re no longer an individual, it’s essentially the perception of a small company.”

In fact, he urged that foreclosed houses be emphasized with incentives in order to “renovate and put the owners in a pool of social housing for 10-15 years. And where they rent it for 700 euros, give it for 400 euros. I think that what the government chooses is ineffective, while what we say has been done in many countries”, added the President of PASOK – Movement for Change.

In addition, Nikos Androulakis underlined that the Greek university still provides competitive study programs, noting: “What do we want? To improve the daily life of the student. To create conditions for better research. The researcher cannot be with a pad. To have a permanent relationship with the university. This is a big issue. Also, to reach the European Union average in research funding. We are too far behind”, while he emphasized that “we are trying not to discredit the Greek university, but to strengthen it”.

Finally, the President of PASOK – Movement for Change referred to the need to establish the national high school diploma.
