Alexis Tsipras refers to the loss of the former President of the Republic, Christos Sartzetakis, in a post on Facebook.
The president of SYRIZA Progressive Alliance emphasizes that Christos Sartzetakis was an emblematic judge, who personified the independence of the Judiciary throughout his career, with the culminating moment being the assassination of Grigoris Lambrakis by the parastate of the Right.
“He paid dearly for his judicial integrity with prosecutions and imprisonment during the junta,” the opposition leader said, adding that democratic Greece had honored him with his election to the presidency.
“We say goodbye to him with respect,” notes Mr. Tsipras.
The press office of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance also refers to the loss of Sartzetaki:
“Christos Sartzetakis in a difficult political time for Greece in the early 1960s was synonymous with judicial integrity and an example of a democratic citizen, contributing significantly to the protection of the Institutions.
We will always remember him as the main protagonist of the investigation into the murder of EDA MP Grigoris Lambrakis – an event that has remained indelible in the memory of the Greek people until today.
Christos Sartzetakis stood up as a judge against the parastate of the Right and the then Palaces, who organized the assassination plan, carried it out and later tried to cover it up.
Para-state and paramilitary circles have never forgotten its role in revealing the truth.
During the junta he was ruthlessly persecuted, dismissed from the judiciary, imprisoned and tortured.
During the Metapolitism, his contribution to the establishment of democratic principles was recognized and he was reinstated to return to his judicial duties.
In 1985, Andreas Papandreou was elected President of the Republic.
We express our condolences to his family and friends. “
