SYRIZA was left without an “Umbrella” and the postscript of the announcement provides for the new movement and then the party that will be formed in view of the European elections.
By Antonis Anzoletou
The third split of SYRIZA is a fact. 13 years ago, Fotis Kouvelis, during the 6th conference of SYANASPISMO, left by creating DIMAR. In the memorial years, Panagiotis Lafazanis left the governing SYRIZA and with 25 MPs initially, formed the People’s Unity. 53 members of the Central Committee had also left. Yesterday 46 members of the leading governing body “waved a handkerchief” in Koumoundourou.
SYRIZA was left without an “Umbrella” and the postscript of the announcement provides for the new movement and then the party that will be formed in view of the European elections. “To all those who have been hoping and seeking for years the end of the Left: “You will not get rid of it so easily”. In the text, they pointed out, among other things, the way in which Stefanos Kasselakis manages SYRIZA: “unfortunately, it is the new authoritarian “culture” that is putting its stamp on a party, which is moving with dizzying speed from the Left, to the known, possibly also unknown for the history of the place, a place of conservative post-politics”, predict features.
Is SYRIZA done with splits and departures? Not at all. Today, unexpectedly, the letters of independence of Euclid Tsakalotos and Petis Perkas are expected from the parliamentary group. They are the only ones among those who resigned who hold a parliamentary seat and certainly do not intend to hand it over, as Stefanos Kasselakis requested. The former Minister of Finance said characteristically that “I was elected to serve the cause of the renewing and radical Left and I will continue to do so”. Thus, from tomorrow, the official opposition is left with 45 MPs, 13 more than PASOK.
All the lights are now on her team Efis Ahtsioglou which, based on the last text it submitted, shortly before the Central Committee’s work closed, showed that it is “increasing speed”. After accusing Stefanos Kasselakis of using reactionary schemes from the far-right quiver and the domestic “anti-SYRIZA” front, they said, showing that “the glass has broken”: “The responsibility for these developments lies with him (Stefanos Kasselakis) and the leadership team.
Stefanos Kasselakis consciously chose instead of the path of composition, the path of building an “internal enemy”. It is a dead-end choice that trivializes Politics, Democracy and the Left”, it is said. Many believe that based on all the signs, the coexistence of Efi Ahtsioglou with Stefanos Kasselakis is practically impossible. The prologue of the new president of SYRIZA “threw everything up in the air”, as they emphasized. The executives who are in her environment do not reveal their intentions. In the text they submitted there is also the signature of Nikos Bistis who is the head of “Gephyra” who composes the part of the “Progressive Alliance” formed by Alexis Tsipras. In this way, an image of versatility is given to those who disagree with the new leadership.
The most interesting fact is that among those who sign there are also seven members of parliament. Efi Ahtsioglou, Anagnostopoulou Co, Nasos Iliopoulos, Dimitris Tzanakopoulos, Meropi Tzoufi, Theano Fotiou, Alexis Haritsis.
However, it is estimated that within K.O. there are still one or two MPs who could potentially join the former “6+6”. Of course, decisions to leave are always easier for executives who do not hold a parliamentary seat. What is certain is that the “Ahtsioglou team” is taking over the internal party opposition, while it is a fact that the channels with Euclid Tsakalotos remain open. The request to the Central Committee to hold a vote so that the deletions do not go through a referendum was made in agreement between the two sides.
The announcement of the historic leader of SYRIZA and the Left, Yannis Dragasakis, shows that he is with one foot outside the party. “Stefanos Kasselakis was formally elected democratically, but he is actually acting undemocratically. His speech to the Central Committee is an insult not only to SYRIZA members but to every democratic citizen, as he seems to ignore basic principles of democracy & legal culture. My departure from the EC meeting, along with many other members, was an imperative act of dignity. I don’t know how much room there is still for SYRIZA-PS to remain a party of the Left.”
The explosive two-day meeting was a result of the unnecessary “reliance” made by Stefanos Kasselakis after the departures of Nikos Voutsis and Panos Skrouletis on Friday. What has the new president accomplished? To release other forces within the party, a part of the old “presidential” ones who were next to Alexis Tsipras.
Olga Gerovasili, Alekos Flambouraris, Kostas Zachariadis, Yannis Ragousis, Thanassis Theocharopoulos and Marilisa Xenogiannakopoulou they essentially forced the president, with the amendment they submitted, to back down on the issue of the referendum. It was incorporated into the Political Decision that “disciplinary sanctions are imposed by the Ethics Committee” with Stefanos Kasselakis explaining in his rejoinder that after the departures there is no question of deletions. The Political Decision was passed with a wide majority, but everything shows that the landscape in SYRIZA has not been cleared yet.
