“No shadow will be left in the investigation of the incident” assured the Minister of Citizen Protection, Yiannis Oikonomou, regarding the tragic death of the 17-year-old in Viotia after being chased by EL.AS.
“We had a tragic incident of the loss of a young man in the circumstances it happened, from the first moment the incident is under investigation. There was a pursuit in which the occupants of the car did not stop, not once, but several times and when the car stopped there was the incident that had this tragic outcome”, the minister added to SKAI and the ‘SIMERA’ show.
“The police are fighting a daily battle for the safety of citizens and must operate within the framework defined by the laws”, he stressed.
“When you have something like this – at the level of the political leadership of the Ministry of Civil Protection – a tragic end you have to wait for the competent authorities to draw their conclusions. We have an ongoing investigation, the court case, the medical examiner and we are waiting to see what will happen,” he told SKAI
“When we have conditions of delinquency and unbelief, unfortunately the chances of having incidents with a tragic outcome multiplyhowever, I emphasize that the police must always operate by weighing incidents based on their training and what the rules of engagement define. I say again that the case is before the courts”, noted Mr. Economou.
Asked about it camera issue to the police he declared that within the 4-year term of the government it will be settled.
“Had the audit conference canceled a tender for the placement of the cameras, yesterday we released the specifications for public consultation, so we will have them within the term”, clarified.
Finally, he emphasized that the case took the path it was supposed to take, saying: “This incident triggers reactions. I appeal to all sides that no shadow will be left in the investigation of the incident. These incidents cannot continue, the case took the path of justice”.
