“To support a new global peace movement, both in the movements and at the diplomatic level,” said the president of the SYRIZA Parliamentary Group, Socrates Famous at the Autumn Meeting of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.

The President of the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, Sokratis Famellos, expressed his strong concern about the escalation of international conflicts and the simultaneous deep crisis of diplomatic institutions during his placement in the Autumn Meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization on Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), taking place in Yerevan, Armenia.

Sokratis Famellos criticized both the international institutions and the leaders of the countries for their weakness and inaction, stressing that the OSCE is perhaps facing one of the worst moments in its history. He even called on member states to intensify their efforts to achieve peace and strengthen all dimensions of security, including human rights and the rule of law.

Referring to the war fronts in the Middle East, Ukraine and Nagorno-Karabakh, he characteristically underlined “The lack of international and especially European leadership in the struggle, with deeds and not words, for peace and democracy, has a high cost for tens of thousands of people in Ukraine, in Israel and Gaza and Nagorno-Karabakh.

“We need a clear message. That is, not only against Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, but also for a ceasefire and peace based on international law.”

“In the Middle East, it is not enough to condemn the terrorist attacks of Hamas and talk about humanitarian law to protect civilians. We must stand with the UN Secretary General in advocating for an immediate ceasefire that will pave the way for peace and the release of the hostages.”

“In your region (Armenia) it is not enough to support a sustainable peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan within the framework of the Brussels process. We must condemn the attack on Nagorno-Karabakh and ensure that peace is built on the basis of full respect for Armenia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. With guarantees for the rights and safety of the Armenian population who left the Nagorno-Karabakh region, including those who wish to return to their homes, and the protection of the monuments of Armenian cultural heritage.”

Sokratis Famellos pointed out that “SYRIZA-P.S. significantly strengthens its parliamentary delegations to the OSCE and the Council of Europe as it believes that supporting bilateral and multilateral diplomacy on the basis of international law is the only path to peace and security.”

At the same time, the president of the KO of SYRIZA emphasized that Greece, like other countries, could play a more active role for the ceasefire in Ukraine or Gaza and for supporting populations facing conflicts, such as in Nagorno-Karabakh, reminding the efforts of SYRIZA, as a Government, by solving the naming issue with North Macedonia and unlocking the European perspective of the Western Balkans.
