The need to support the “frontline” countries, in order to “fully” perform the role of guarding and controlling EU entry, was underlined by Minister of Citizen Protection, Yiannis Oikonomouattending the Council of EU Justice and Home Affairs Ministers taking place today in Brussels.

The entire statement of G. Economos is as follows:

“The increased duration and intensity of the crises in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, create enormous challenges in the field of security, which are of capital importance for states, the economy, democracy and for citizens.

The systems and personnel of the security services are being severely tested and need strengthening. Especially countries on the front line, such as Greece, need reinforcement and support to fully fulfill their role – of guarding the first line of control before entering the EU. Without increased vigilance at the external borders, everything after that is also difficult we must bear this in mind. Also, increased resolve is needed in managing security challenges within the EU to avoid worsening and unpleasant situations.”

The Council is expected to discuss the progress report on all Pact legislative files on migration and asylum.

Ministers will also be briefed on the current situation regarding the external dimension of migration. The agenda will also include the impact of the crisis in the Middle East and Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine on the internal security of the EU.
