The first poll findings showed that New Left, the parliamentary group of “11” that emerged from the split of SYRIZA, has many steps to take. It appears to be below the 3% mark, but its executives are not worried. They believe that there is still a lot of time until the European elections in order to leave a strong impression, especially on society. Their presence in Parliament has ensured them the possibility to carry out their political interventions. And there will be many opportunities from the new year not only for clashes, but for the parties to develop their positions. After all, we are still at the beginning of the second government term of the New Democracy.

According to the latest information, the New Left is advancing with fast and decisive steps in its organizational structure. The goal and central strategy is to evolve from a parliamentary group into a social, political trend with presence and intervention inside and outside Parliament. On Thursday, a nationwide executive meeting was held and the procedures for setting up the first prefectural and local coordinators are already underway. Until the end of January, the New Left has planned to proceed to open assemblies with the presence of MPs and executives in all prefectures.

The public positions of the MPs, as well as top executives from the “Umbrella” will be more frequent now. After all, there are about six months left until June 9, when the Euro elections. The New Left, as its executives point out, “addresses a call for participation to young men and women who experience accuracy and inequalities and live the odyssey of looking for housing. Who see the climate crisis as the biggest challenge of our time, but feel that politics is something distant and foreign, to progressive and left-wing citizens who are looking for a convincing and credible alternative to the right-wing rule of Kyriakos Mitsotakis”.

As it emerged in the Parliament, but also from the interventions that have been made, the top issue on the agenda of the New Left is the organization of the intervention against private universities. As Alexis Haritsis pointed out in his extensive statement, “the New Left will fight, inside and outside the Parliament, to prevent the passage of the New Democracy bill and to open a serious, organized debate about what the country really needs us: the renaissance of public higher education”. In the immediate future, university meetings and student initiatives are being organized.
