The belief that various products of the underworld are circulating at the doors of organized followers, mainly drugs, weapons, and anything else, was expressed by the professor of Criminology and former minister, Giannis Panousis, speaking at the First Program for the murder of 19-year-old Alkis in Thessaloniki.
Do serious research on their common features
“Many of those involved in these stories of violence both on and off the pitch and all that we have seen lately, are not some innocent in favor of a team or a jersey. “They also have connections”, he stressed, estimating that those who “came out of paganism” must have other common characteristics that connected them and not only the “shirt”, but as he said, a serious research must be done on the ideological-political-social characteristics. He stressed that the phenomena of organized crime can not survive long without having “backs”. “Some erase the accusations, do not appear as witnesses, some rescue the perpetrators. “There is a system, now how deep is it, what should I answer?” He asked.
Let us not be divided by this tragic incident
He asked for the support of the government from both the society and the sports field, because the tough decisions that are required cannot be made without this support. “It will be doubly tragic if we find an opportunity to be divided by this tragic incident,” he said. He admitted that the State does not take serious decisions – immediate cessation of sporting events and relegation of teams – because the costs are high.
It is not fan violence, it is a criminal act
“We are wrongly referring to fan violence, we must refer to criminal acts from criminal elements. Think of a store as a “yellow kiosk” because it belongs to a group. And one wearing a purple T-shirt, goes and robs it. Is this fan violence? Or one with a “x” color shirt rapes a woman wearing a blouse of another color. Is this fan violence? In my opinion not. Here we are dealing with murder. It does not matter what pretext everyone finds and what motivation they are referring to. It could be the color of a car, the name of a movie or a girl. If we expand the concept so much, everyone could say that it is fan violence in all crimes. “That the supporter of a team killed or stole the supporter of a rival team”, Mr. Panousis explained.
Hooligans do not look at their team
According to him, all these sad incidents have nothing to do with the conflict for the team or the “price” of the jersey. “Most do not even look at the stadium, the hooligans do not look at their team. They can win 3-0 or lose 3-0, they do not care about the result. “They are only interested in the fact of the use of violence, which of course, while being shown on television, also gives them some ‘heroic’ characteristics,” he said. As he clarified, the media coverage of the violence in the stadiums, makes the perpetrators “alive”. “Watching the episodes, for the perpetrators is a fact, they feel like heroes, look what we did. That is why they often record these transactions on their mobile phones. “That way they stay alive and become heroes,” he said characteristically.
In the past, they brought the same guys from abroad to fights
You can see them in a disaster in a square, in a procession, and then you can see them in the stadium and they are the same. I call them criminals in the sense that they are related to crime, they move in this area. Now if they themselves are cleftrons, jerks or whatever, that needs research. But in any case they are not innocent children who went to the stadium and due to an incident, they hit each other. They go organized to do episodes, and in addition to episodes they go to do other things. And for this, as you can see, they used to bring the same guys from abroad to races. “From Yugoslavia, Italy, etc.”, said the professor of Criminology.
Violence in Greece is a “cultural” phenomenon
The State, the whole system, must at some point understand what is happening. Violence has become a cultural phenomenon in Greece. Some people think that they can win by force. “Whether it is a violent political speech, or a violent sports movement, or a television violence, we think that violence is a way of prevailing,” he concluded.
