“The Treaty of Lausanne constitutes the solid legal foundation on which the framework of the entire region is based”emphasized the government representative Pavlos Marinakis on the show “Today” on SKAI, when he was asked to take a position on the statements of Professor Angelos Syrigos who spoke of the outdated Treaty of Lausanne, on issues such as the exchange of prisoners and weapons systems.

The government representative criticized the president of SYRIZA St. Kaselaki who made a critical reference to the statements of Mr. Syrigos, saying that these statements “give food to the Turks”.

As Mr. Marinakis said in the Declaration of Athens, a clear reference is made to international law, the point of which is the Treaty of Lausanne.

Clarifying, he stated that the professor spoke to SKAI in his scientific capacity and did not refer to sovereign rights, making it clear that there is no question of Angelos Syrigos resigning.

“Kaselakis is hastily dealing with a situation that was not an issue all day,” he noted and added “Mr. Kasselakis is not a social media commentator. When there is no issue even through the mouth of the prime minister and the minister of foreign affairs, it is clear that he created the problem himself”.

On the question of whether the Treaty of Lausanne is considered obsolete, the government representative replied that the government considers it “as the most solid foundation that settles the relations of the region as a whole” and added that “it is possible that there was problematic wording or it was done in a way that could create problems, but from that point until the point of an announcement from the official opposition party saying that it gives food, it makes a difference”.

He added that “Mr. Syrigos did not talk about the demilitarization of the islands and made an analysis of individual conditions that from 1974 to 2023 have changed according to him. It was a scientific analysis” he noted and added that the intervention of the president of SYRIZA did not take dimensions for the good of our country.

On the issue of same-sex couples, Mr. Marinakis said that in the government’s “agenda for the new year, there are issues where there was no consensus. This is one of the bills in the four-year period.”

Regarding the time, he said that we are waiting for the official announcements, while when asked what will happen if a member of parliament does not vote for it, he answered “it is good to wait for the text to come and see what the rules are.”

Regarding the reactions of the Church, he said that “we respect its views but it does not legislate”.
