The need “to bring the Left, the voice of the many, the visions and anxieties of the new generation to the forefront of politicshe emphasized the president of the KO of the New Left, Alexis Haritsis in his speech at the opening of the meeting of the executives of the New Left today in the Serafion of the municipality of Athens.

“Our meeting today is not the first, but it is a decisive step for the formation of the New Left“, he said, emphasizing that NA “has already achieved something extremely important: to reverse the climate of privatization, demobilization, disillusionment that followed the parliamentary elections of 2023».

The aim, as he said, of today’s meeting is to discuss “road map” in view of the European elections and the “formation of the new organization of the left».

In this context, he referred to “significant positive writing samples” which the KO of the Southern Left has already given, such as “in the debate on the budget, on taxation, in the committees and in the plenary session of the Parliament”, but also in taking initiatives, such as the meetings with collectives and trade union bodies or the visit in Thessaly, “where government oligarchy, operational failures and climate crisis conditions have led to unprecedented disaster».

“With actions and initiatives, we want to turn anxiety into a new political force. We are talking about the need for productive transformation, the need to shield our societies from natural phenomena, about the need and possibility for our cities, villages, regions to be places of fair and inclusive development”, he noted, emphasizing at the same time that “the crisis of the left and the progressive space in our country is primarily a crisis of credibility».

Criticizing SYRIZA, he said that “is turning into a party that is rapidly mutating, leaving the field of the Left” but also “from the field of seriousness”. “A party under a new leadership group that speaks of an ‘Islamabad agenda’, opposes foreign policy from the right, insists on cheap and often apolitical denunciation. And unfortunately, it is now clear that anyone who does not produce politics produces toxicity”, he said characteristically, while also speaking of their own “responsibilities” who “in the name of unity” tolerated “phenomena of degeneration».

“The founding of the New Left was a statement of defiance against this degeneration and obsolescence“, underlined Al. Haritsis, while he set the goal of the new organization to create a “new model of politics”, leaving spikes against “logic of the leader who is in an ‘unmediated’ relationship with society“, as “it harbors the worst versions of patriarchy».

Referring to the political situation in the country, he noted that there is currently a “political vacuum”. “The hegemony of the Right still has no rival. But he will get. And our role is exactly this: from tomorrow, let Mr. Mitsotakis’ system of power know that there is a political and social current that questions his policy and paves the way for a new era for our country“, he characteristically said.

Turning his fire on the government, he noted that it “represents a class power bloc that serves the specific interests of an enlarged economic elite” and that it “consolidates its ideological hegemony through discipline, intimidation, clientelistic corruption and ultimately the undermining of democratic institutions”.

In particular, he criticized the policies of the government “reverse redistribution of income”, from “the unequal sharing of the costs of the health crisis” to the “inflation premium” and “embezzlement of the Recovery Fund».

Describing the “road map” of the New Left ahead of the European elections, Al. Haritsis referred to the key issues that will preoccupy the upcoming campaign: social justice, climate justice and the restart of democracy.

“The proposal of the New Left is specific: We will fight the battle of the political content. A content that always originates from the territory of the left. And on this all the political forces of the wider progressive space will be measured. Not with backroom top deals. But with social and programmatic convergences. The New Left will play a leading role in this effort”, emphasized Al. Charitsis and concluded by expressing the belief that the New Left could be “the positive surprise of the European elections».
