Mitsotakis to SKAI: Elections will be held at the end of the four years with the current law

by

The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was categorical that the elections will take place at the end of the four years with the existing election law, during his interview with SKAI and on the show “Kalimera” with Giorgos Avtias.

Asked if there is a case to change the election law, Mr. Mitsotakis answered “none”.

He added: “We have an electoral law, with this electoral law we will go to the elections, with this electoral law I estimate that we will win the elections”.

The Prime Minister went on to say that SYRIZA “changed the electoral law and took us to the simple proportional system, with which the first elections will take place. My view has always been very specific, that the simple analog creates major governance problems and that’s why we changed the electoral law and we have an enhanced proportional representation.

Not as enhanced as the previous one, but in my opinion a fair system, which balances proportionality and governability. Beyond that, for me one-party governments have a value to the extent that we can make quick decisions and implement our government plan with determination.

“Purpose of the composition”

It does not mean, however, that having autonomy, that you necessarily have the dominance of one party alone. See what I did as Prime Minister and how many executives I joined in the government, in the state mechanism, who do not come from New Democracy. Our goal, then, is always to be able to compose. But at the same time we can not discount government stability, which you know how important it is for the economy.

At the moment, the next four years will be four years in which I believe we will finally be able as a country to make great convergence with Europe. To become a normal European country. We have succeeded in some areas, you see the digital state, let’s say. The significance of the next four years is enormous.

If we manage – and will succeed – with a stable government in the next four years, to have growth rates much higher than the European average, then really at the end of it – if the Greek citizens trust us again – at the end of eight years we will be able to we say, yes, we changed the country “.

Elections in 2023

Regarding the time of the elections, he said: “The elections will take place in 2023, at the end of four years. “If I was looking at the difference, I would probably have held elections in the summer of 2020, where we had the biggest difference.”

He stated that “there are many who can suggest this, but I am an institutionalist and that means that ending the electoral cycle is right and healthy for our democracy.

Yes, indeed, let us not be fooled, the parliamentary system gives this opportunity to the Prime Minister, to choose the time of the elections. However, I consider the exhaustion of the electoral cycle to be an institutional conquest for the country.

And can I tell you something else? I think things will get better. A very important project has been done by this government and I think that many of what we are saying today may be understood by the citizens somewhere but not restrained.

Since I believe that things in the country will go better and not worse, I have every reason to want to hold elections at the end of four years».
