ND MP, Thodoris Roussopoulos, was elected president of the Parliamentary Assembly of Europe today.

As of today, Th. Roussopoulos is the 35th president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe since 1949 and the first Greek citizen to hold the office. He will serve a one-year term, renewable once.

Mr. Rousopoulos was unanimously elected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, while there was no nomination against him. He was supported by all five major parties in the Parliamentary Assembly – Group of Socialists/Democrats and Greens (SOC), Group of the European People’s Party (EPP/CD), Group of European Conservatives & Democratic Alliance (EC/DA), Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Europe (ALDE) and Group of the United European Left (UEL).

The Council of Europe is the European organization for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, based in Strasbourg and founded 75 years ago. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is composed of 612 Members of Parliament from the 46 member countries who represent 675 million inhabitants of the European continent.
