Mr. Haritsis, referring to the passing of the bill for the introduction of postal voting in the European elections and national referendums, repeated that “Mr. Mitsotakis’s government, the last thing it cares about is the defense of democratic norms».

He added that with what happened in the last three days “the extent of the coup planned by the New Democracy Government was revealed in its entirety” and how against the backdrop of the amendment to introduce postal voting in national elections that was rejected because it did not gather the required majority, “the N.D. showed that what she was interested in was to proceed to a parliamentary tacticianism, to an institutional adventurism».

Mr. Haritsis, however, also referred to the responsibilities of the opposition forces, especially SYRIZA and PASOK, who, as he said, “they rushed to consent to the bill, as early as the first committee last week, thus opening the appetite for the government to proceed with these unconstitutional actions».

On the contrary, the stance of the New Left from the first moment had “democratic seriousness and institutional consistency which we demonstrated and finally forced the progressive forces to make a 180-degree turn and vote against both the amendment and the bill.”

Mr. Haritsis in his speech pointed out that “facing the reality formed by the suffocating embrace of power by Mr. Mitsotakis with the big economic interests, we had to and must give an answer, which at this moment, if we want to be honest, is not given by any other political force of the left and the progressive space unfortunately». He attacked SYRIZA, saying that “the party that we built for two decades, many and many of us with great effort, has been led to an unprecedented degeneration and an unprecedented discredit”.

“We also have a share of responsibility, for the fact that we tolerated ethno-populist phenomena in our area in the past, for the fact that we tolerated degenerate logics that infiltrated our party and are now dominant in Mr. Kasselakis’ SYRIZA” said Mr. Haritsis.
