“While in the rest of Europe food price increases are slowing down to 5.7%, in Greece their annual growth rate reached 8.9% in December. In a number of basic consumer products, the price increases are breaking records. Fruit: Greece +14.9% – Eurozone +10% Cheese: Greece +9.4% – Eurozone 1.7% Olive Oil: Greece +58.5% – Eurozone +48.5% Vegetables: Greece +13.7% – Eurozone +9.6%. The government lost the battle precisely because it simply didn’t fight to protect consumers, with the result that they are the big victims of the crisis and the multinationals the big winners,” he notes characteristically.
It is indicative that the turnover of supermarkets increased in the 11th month of 2023 by 710 million euros compared to the 11th month of 2022, Mr. Androulakis adds.
