“Greece will exhaust every possibility, so that we can have positive developments in the Cyprus issue,” said the head of Greek diplomacy
Meeting with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres the foreign minister had on Monday, George Gerapetritis.
After the meeting, Mr. Gerapetritis stated:
“Today I had the opportunity to speak with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, at the United Nations headquarters in New York. We had a great conversation. We exchanged ideas on all the burning issues, on the great crises, which are currently going on worldwide.
Greece, always committed to International Law, foreign policy principles and rules, is at the disposal of the United Nations Organization. It is something that the Secretary General appreciates and always looks forward to our cooperation.
Right now unfortunately, we are at a standstill in the Middle East, Ukraine, Haiti, Sub-Saharan Africa. The United Nations has a very important role to play. We should possibly see the process by which decisions are made, which should be quick, efficient. To give the necessary conviction of integrity, but also of accountability for those who fall into offenses related to International Law.
We discussed the issue of Cyprus with the Secretary General. The opportunity given to discuss the Cyprus issue between Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot community is important. With the personal intervention of the Secretary General, the Personal Envoy has been appointed, who has the mandate to proceed with discussions. We remain firmly committed to the United Nations Security Council resolutions on the Bizonal Bi-Communal Federation. The opportunity, which is given, should be used by the sides, to sit at the dialogue table. Greece will exhaust every possibility, so that we can have positive developments in the Cyprus issue”.
